Being the boss can be extremely rewarding, but as anything involving people does, is also has its challenges. Dealing with poor performance or behavioural issues in the workplace is not something that anyone looks forward to, nevertheless, as a boss or manager, you will most likely have to deal with some kind of disciplinary action at some point. It is very important that when an employee starts with you that is it made very clear to them what the rules of conduct and behaviour are and what the consequences will be if they are not followed.
The first thing to consider is, is a formal disciplinary actually needed? Often a more informal conversation is enough to resolve the situation. Of course, if the circumstances are more serious, then the formal disciplinary route will have to be taken. The key here is to have clear policies and procedures in place from day one and ensure they are always followed. It is also important to deal with any disciplinary situations promptly as they arise. No matter how tempting it may be to avoid the situation due the unpleasant nature, avoidance will only make the problem worse!

Fairness – Make sure the employee has ample opportunity to present their case and respond to any allegations made against them.
Notes – It’s very important that minutes of the disciplinary meeting are recorded. This should be done by an impartial party.
