Retaining Existing Staff

Retaining Existing Staff

As many a business owner will tell you, it’s not enough to simply hire great people to work for you, you have to work to keep them too! One of the key points to this is understanding what makes people leave. It’s not often, as you might think, due to salary. Staff will consider leaving a job where they consistently feel under-valued, can see no clear path for progression, feel unsupported or there is an environment of low staff morale. That’s not to say, of course, that pay is not a contributory factor, but rarely is it the main reason for staff to seek employment elsewhere.

“To engage the workforce and remain competitive, it’s no longer sufficient to focus solely on benefits. Top employers create an environment where employees feel connected to the organization and have a positive work experience that’s part of a rich, fulfilling life. – David Ballard, assistant executive director for organizational excellence at the American Psychological Association

Providing your employees with ancillary benefits such as gym memberships and healthcare will keep employees healthy and happy which has a direct impact on productivity. It is also important for employees to feel ‘part of the plan’. Let them know what the company goals and objectives are, not only will they appreciated being included, they may have some fantastic ideas on how to achieve them!

It’s also important to allow your employees to grow, just because Joe Bloggs is a spreadsheet whizz kid, doesn’t necessarily mean that they want to be doing that day in and day out. A bored employee will wander, give them new challenges to keeps things interesting!

Hiring an HR professional is definitely worth considering as not only will they be up to date with employment law and trends, they will also know of employee benefit schemes and perks that you may not be aware of. If you engage the services of an HR professional right from the hiring stage, you will also make sure that you get the people in from the start. They will make sure that the staff you employ are right for the job roll, and just as importantly, the culture of your business.
